Snow on the cards for Hobart

Parts of Hobart could cop snow early next week, the Bureau of Meteorology says in warnings for the island state.

A broad low-pressure system will bring cold air, showers and snow to Tasmania's west and south from Sunday, the bureau's state director John Bally says.

"With the coldest air on Monday, at this stage, snow could fall to very low levels, meaning snow in Hobart is possible."

Snow last fell in Hobart in 1986.

The amount of snow is hard to forecast but repeat falls across the highlands could result in road closures over several days.
