An increase in renewable energy will make Tasmania entirely energy self-sufficient, the government says.

It plans to generate an extra 1000 gigawatt hours of renewable energy by 2022 - enough to cover the amount imported from mainland Australia via Basslink.

Ahead of an expected announcement on Wednesday, Energy Minister Matthew Broom said new hydro, wind, biomass and large-scale solar projects would form the backbone of the plan.
