Rain and wind keep Tassie lights on

Tasmania has reinstated its title as a clean, green energy state - for now.

Following substantial rain, Hydro Tasmania on Thursday confirmed the state is powered entirely by renewable energy for the first time in 2016, after record low rainfall and a broken Bass Strait electricity cable forced the government to use diesel and gas generators to keep the lights on.

"We may require some bursts of diesel and gas generation over coming months," Hydro boss Stephen Davy said in a statement, adding that there is currently enough hydro and wind energy to power the state.
