Public hearing for Hobart abuse cases

Allegations involving officials at a private Hobart boys school more than 50 years ago will be examined at the first public hearing of the child sex abuse royal commission in Tasmania.

The Hutchins School's former headmaster David Lawrence and teacher Lyndon Hickman, both now dead, are alleged to have sexually abused students in the 1960s.

How the school and the Anglican Diocese of Tasmania responded to allegations against the men will be examined by the national inquiry.

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, which has previously heard evidence behind closed doors in Hobart, will return to the capital city for the public hearings from November 19 to 28.

The state's Anglican church has confirmed it will co-operate with the inquiry.

The commission has received allegations of child sexual abuse in more than 1000 individual institutions across Australia and has held hearings in every state and territory since it was established by the federal government last year.
