Possible future Beaconsfield anniversary

The 10th anniversary of the Beaconsfield mine rescue won't be the last time the event is marked, not for one of the survivors at least.

Almost 200 people gathered in the northern Tasmanian township on Monday, including Brant Webb and Todd Russell - the two men rescued a decade ago after spending two weeks trapped underground by a rock fall.

Their colleague, Larry Knight, 44, was killed when a 2.2-magnitude earth tremor sparked the emergency on April 25, 2006.

For Mr Webb, it remains an emotional time each year and he forecasts those feelings will continue.

"I will (remember the) anniversary every year on May 9 and we always reflect on Larry on Anzac Day," he told reporters on Monday.

Mr Webb said it's important to remember what happened at the now-decommissioned mine, so that it can throw the spotlight on worker safety.

"The most important thing that comes out of a mine is a miner," he said.

Local mayor Christina Holmdahl said it became obvious that it was important to hold an event in recognition of the anniversary.

"It was about celebrating that Brant Webb and Todd Russell are with us," she said.

"Through our recovery and reflection ceremony we hope that the people of Beaconsfield have in some ways been given some closure of that terrible event that happened."
