Poppies have been stolen from Tasmanian farms, prompting a serious warning from police.

The poppy heads, which contain the active opioid ingredient used to make drugs such as morphine, have been taken since Wednesday from sites at Moriarty and Wesley Vale in the west, and Glenora in the south.

"Police are concerned that if consumed, these poppies may cause serious illness or death," read a police statement issued on Friday.
