Pedestrian struck by car on Tas highway

A man is in serious condition after he was struck by a car while crossing an unlit section of a Tasmanian highway.

The pedestrian was crossing the on ramp of the Brooker Highway at Claremont on Friday night when he was hit by the car. He was aided by members of the public before being taken to hospital in a serious condition.

The driver of the car was also injured, suffering facial and hand injuries. He was also taken to hospital for treatment and to undergo mandatory drug and alcohol testing. Police do not believe speed was a factor.

The Brooker Highway was closed to southbound traffic, between Abbotsfield Road and Claremont Link Road, for about five hours as crash investigation and forensic officers investigated the crash. Police would like to hear from witnesses.
