Parties asked for pre-poll parrot pledge

Political parties are being asked to promise protection for the critically endangered swift parrot in the lead up to the federal election.

The Bob Brown Foundation on Tuesday released a report showing that current laws enable the logging of irreplaceable habitat, including on Bruny Island south of Hobart, and spokeswoman Jenny Weber said the group is seeking assurances of support ahead of the July 2 poll.

"We are calling on action from Liberal, Labor and the Greens in this federal election campaign so they will commit to protecting habitat and prevent the extinction of species such as the swift parrot," she told reporters.
