On-shore testing for Tassie shellfish

Tasmania's growing shellfish industry will get its own biotoxin testing facility, meaning the state's oysters, rock lobster, abalone, scallops and clams can be locally certified fit for sale.

The new $1.2 million Hobart-based facility was announced on Wednesday for inclusion in the upcoming state budget and is forecast to improve profitability for growers who currently have to send produce interstate for testing.

"The facility will undertake the compliance testing required to ensure the highest possible product quality which is fit for local, national and international sale, and will provide the service needed for the industry to maintain and grow its high-value export products," Primary Industries Minister Jeremy Rockliff said.
