Nurses take the stand in Tas baby inquest

Hospital nurses who helped care for a baby suffering multiple injuries and who later died from head trauma will give evidence at an inquest on Tuesday.

Tasmanian boy Bjay Johnstone was just 45 days old when he died in November 2012.

Coroner Olivia McTaggart is trying to find who inflicted the non-accidental injuries, and how.

Three weeks before his death, Bjay was in hospital suffering fractures to his skull, ribs and pelvis, plus signs of spinal damage and multiple brain trauma.

His father Simon Johnstone has been named as a person of interest in the death and has been previously convicted of ill-treating Bjay.

But the injuries he inflicted did not contribute to the child's death, the inquest has been told.
