A NSW doctor charged with the murder of his elderly mother in Hobart will remain in custody after a brief court appearance.

Stephen John Edwards, 61, on Monday was flanked by security guards in the dock of the Hobart Magistrates Court.

"We are seeking an adjournment without a plea on this occasion," lawyer James O'Shannessey said.
