Moves to protect Tas Aboriginal relics

The Tasmanian government has moved to crack down on criminals who deface, damage or destroy Aboriginal relics, with new legislation tabled in parliament.

A draft bill tabled on Wednesday scraps the previous cut off of 1876 as the categorisation of a relic, removes a six-month time limit for prosecuting offences, and increases penalties for perpetrators.

"The effect of the new offences and penalties is an acknowledgement of an obligation to exercise due diligence, and take reasonable precautions, to avoid harm to Aboriginal heritage," Parks and Heritage Minister Matthew Groom said.
