Plans to build a multi-million dollar captive breeding facility to help save the endangered Orange-bellied parrot have been announced by the Tasmanian government.

Construction of the $2.5 million facility was announced on Thursday as part of the state's 2017/18 budget.

The parrot migrates annually from Victoria to Tasmania and it is estimated there are fewer than 50 left in the wild.

It is hoped the program will allow more parrots to be released into World Heritage areas.

The facility will be funded by the sale of the existing one at Taroona in the state's south.
