A Tasmanian mechanic was crushed to death when a 700kg ride-on mower fell off a trolley jack, a coroner has found.

The 39-year-old victim from Launceston, whose identity was not revealed, died in October 2013 more than a month after the incident at his workplace, coroner Simon Cooper found on Tuesday.

"As (he) used a spanner to undo the sump plug ... the force that he applied was sufficient to move the unbalanced and unsupported mower off the trolley jack," Mr Cooper wrote.

He was pinned to the concrete workshop floor where he was found by workmates including his brother.

After several weeks in hospital the man died from his injuries.

Mr Cooper reinforced the importance of using jack stands in such instances to properly secure vehicles.
