Improved jobs data for Tasmania

Once plagued with the nation's worst unemployment rate, Tasmania has made a sharp jump in the right direction, according to the latest jobless figures.

January's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.6 per cent, down from 6.3 per cent in December and trailing only NSW, the ABS reported on Thursday.

CommSec chief economist Craig James described the island state's latest result as sensational but in line with Tasmania's improving economy.
