Hobart bid to move Aust Day 'unacceptable'

Hobart City Council's support for changing the date of Australia Day has prompted a rebuke from a federal government MP.

The council has voted to lobby Canberra to find a new date for the national holiday so it doesn't exclude some groups, including Aboriginals who commonly refer it as 'Invasion Day'.

"It is unacceptable that Hobart Council's attempt to politicise Australian citizenship has been decided without the consent of ratepayers," Liberal Alex Hawke said in a statement issued on Thursday, adding that he has written to council expressing his view.
