Greens propose fracking ban forever in Tas

The Tasmanian Greens have tabled in state parliament a bill proposing a permanent ban on fracking.

Party leader Kim Booth on Thursday introduced the amendment to the lower house, less than a month after the Liberal administration extended by five years a moratorium on the mining practice of hydraulic fracturing, a popular method to source coal seam gas.

"Our farmers deserve complete certainty about investing in long term cropping and stock business cases," Mr Booth said in support of his proposal.

The move would also provide fairness to the mining sector, by forever ruling out fracking, he added.

The government has the numbers in the lower house to vote down the bill.
