A Tasmanian coroner will on Tuesday open an inquest into the death of a woman killed in a car crash which led to the conviction and subsequent dismissal of the state's director of public prosecutions.

Launceston woman Natalia Pearn, 27, died in a March 2013 smash on the Midlands Highway when her car was struck head-on by a vehicle driven by then DPP Tim Ellis.

Ellis was later found guilty of negligent driving and handed a suspended jail sentence.

The Tasmanian government then removed him from office citing his misbehaviour.

State coroner Olivia McTaggart will oversee the inquest.
