A bushwalker stranded in Tasmania's southern wilderness has used an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon to alert search and rescue services.

The 56-year-old man, who is uninjured, raised the alarm on Monday from an area near Lake Skinner and a rescue crew reached him the same day before the party camped overnight to shelter from bad weather.

"The man had told his wife to contact police if he was overdue, plus he activated his personal EPIRB, so he was well prepared," Senior Constable Callum Herbert said, adding that the man was being winched by helicopter to safety on Tuesday.
