Early release scrapped for Tas inmates

Inmates in Tasmania will no longer be granted remissions for an early release from jail, the state government has announced.

Acting Minister for Corrections Guy Barnett told parliament on Thursday the government plans to remove the remissions clause of the state's corrections act, which allows offenders to be released up to three months early, usually for good behaviour.

"This is clearly out of line with community expectations and the law in other jurisdictions, with remissions having been phased out in other states and territories of Australia in recent decades," Mr Barnett said, citing a review into the practice.
