Devonport escape attempt goes awry

A man's impromptu escape attempt from Devonport Magistrate's Court has quickly unravelled.

Appearing for breaching a sentence order on Tuesday, the 30-year-old fled out the court's front entrance and jumped into a getaway car occupied by a man and woman.

Two members of the public spotted him being chased by police and manoeuvred their car to block the white vehicle, enabling them to recover the man.

He was charged with escape and will remain in custody until his next court appearance on November 4.

The female passenger in the white car has also been charged with obstructing police.
