Cracker plans fizzle out

Plans for fireworks to fly at a cracker night in southern Tasmania have officially fizzled out.

The operators of Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary on the outskirts of Hobart were outraged by local government permits granted to neighbouring properties for Saturday night, with concerns for the welfare of native animals in captivity.

The park is home to Tasmanian Devils, along with other vulnerable creatures, and Director Greg Irons had criticised the decision to allow fireworks within a kilometre of its boundary.

But WorkSafe Tasmania announced on Friday it would revoke several permits for the displays with concerns for "the real risk of harm to native animals".

"More generally, WorkSafe Tasmania urges anyone participating in approved fireworks displays tomorrow night to be responsible, considerate and safe, a WorkSafe Tasmania spokesperson said.

Tasmanian Greens spokesman Nick McKim said it was a great result but the fireworks permit system needed reviewing.
