Charges against company over mine deaths

The operators of a Tasmanian copper mine have been charged over the deaths of two workers in 2013, with the state prosecutor claiming the company failed to ensure safe work systems.

Craig Gleeson, 45, and Alistair Lucas, 25, fell from a platform in the main shaft of the mine at Queenstown in the state's west and a subsequent WorkSafe investigation recommended charges be laid.

Copper Mines of Tasmania manager Jared DeRoss said the company will comply with all necessary legal processes but declined to comment further on the matter.
