Call to protect endangered parrot in Tas

The swift parrot is critically endangered so logging in Tasmania needs to stop to protect the birds, an environmental group says.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature has raised the bird onto the critically endangered list, and recommends that all areas of public land that support the parrot be under secure conservation management.

The move is being backed by environmental groups and the Greens, who say logging must stop in the bird's habitat.

"Current management of logging in Tasmania is failing the Swift Parrot, all logging of its breeding habitat must cease," environment group Markets For Change chief executive Peg Putt said.

The group is also calling on companies that use timber from Tasmania's forests to stop taking product from the parrot's habitat.
