Bass Strait cable repair needs calm waters

Operators of a Bass Strait seabed electricity cable will be hoping for calm conditions next week as they work on the deck of a ship to replace a damaged section about 90km from the Tasmanian coast.

Basslink boss Malcolm Eccles on Friday said repair works are on track to be completed by June but weather could bring the plans unstuck.

"Each joint will require a window of relatively calm sea conditions and clear weather for six continuous days to allow such works to be completed safely," the company said in a statement, adding that the first joint will be attempted on Tuesday.
