Aurora Australis runs aground
Australia's icebreaker Aurora Australis has run ashore at Mawson Station while resupplying the Antarctic base.
A statement from the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) on Wednesday confirmed 67 expeditioners and crew were on board the ship when it broke free of its mooring lines at 3.15pm during a blizzard.
All have been reported safe and well.
While the ship remains watertight, with no damage to the hull, blizzard conditions are making it difficult to fully assess the damage.
Winds of more than 130km/h were recorded in the lead-up to the ship breaking its mooring lines, the statement said.
Blizzard conditions are expected to continue for the next 24 hours, and crew will be monitoring the hull from inside the ship until weather clears.
Mawson Station is one of three Australian bases in the Australian Antarctic Territory of East Antarctica.
