Another wind farm in pipeline for Tas

Plans for a $1.2 billion wind farm in northwest Tasmania will rely on the addition of a second Bass Strait electricity cable.

Global energy developer UPC Renewables has gathered more than 12 years of wind data, along with conducting environmental and financial modelling for a 10,000-hectare site on Robbins Island which is expected to deliver up to 1,000MW of energy.

"Once built, it will complement the prime minister's recently announced strategy for Tasmanian wind and hydro systems to act as southeast Australia's renewable energy battery and is close to the Australian Energy Market Operator's proposed entry point for a second interconnector between Tasmania and Victoria," UPC spokesman Anton Rohner said of the development, which is yet to receive planning approval and comes two days after a 49-turbine farm was confirmed for central Tasmania.
