$12m Tas payout includes eye tracking tech

A record $12 million Tasmanian compensation payout includes funds for state-of-the-art eye tracking technology that one day might help a brain-damaged quadriplegic woman communicate with her carers.

Briton Holly Raper, 27, was injured when she fell from a quad bike while working on a King Island dairy farm in 2011 and the Tasmanian Supreme Court this week finalised her civil claim by awarding her $12.2 million, including more than $830,000 for funds management.

Justice Stephen Estcourt's final judgment, published on Wednesday, includes more than $31,000 for Tobii Eyegaze assessment, which is hoped to one day help Ms Raper to answer questions through the movement she has retained in one eye.

Ms Raper's legal costs of more than $1 million are also to be settled by the farm owner's insurance company, with a final figure yet to be reached.
