Tas Liberals lead Labor in Newspoll

Tasmania's Liberal opposition holds a big lead over the Labor government just one day out from the state election, a Newspoll shows.

The poll conducted for The Australian newspaper has the Liberals on 53 per cent of the statewide vote, with Labor trailing on 23 per cent.

The Greens, who form government with Labor, are further behind on 16 per cent, while the Palmer United Party is reportedly at four per cent.

The poll has Labor Premier Lara Giddings' satisfaction rating at just 29 per cent, compared with 53 per cent for Liberal leader Will Hodgman.

The numbers suggest the primary vote for the Liberals in Saturday's poll could be the largest won by the party since the 1992 election, The Australian reports.

Despite the downbeat poll, Ms Giddings wasn't giving up hope of winning the ballot.

"I will be there until the very end of this campaign," she told reporters in Hobart.

"The polls say one thing, but the street says another."

She conceded Tasmania had been through a "challenging period", but said the state had now "come out the other side".

The state had experienced record retail spending, three consecutive quarters of economic growth and more than 1900 jobs created over the past four months, she said in a statement.

"We have a proud record over 16 years of transforming Tasmania and I just feel so honoured and privileged to have been a part of that," Ms Giddings added.
