Tas death takes national road toll to 3

The death of a teenager in Tasmania has taken the nation's official Christmas and New Year road toll to three.

Emergency services were called to Blackstone Heights, in the outer suburbs of Launceston, at about 12.30am on Thursday where a 19-year-old woman, the car's driver and only occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The teenager's death is the first road fatality in Tasmania and comes after another two deaths on NSW roads during the official Christmas and New Year toll period.

A person died at the scene while two others were trapped after two vehicles crashed at Bostobrick, in northern NSW, on Wednesday afternoon.

It came after a 44-year-old woman was killed when she lost control of her car and hit a tree at Turramurra in Sydney's north on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, two disqualified drivers were arrested overnight as officers continued to patrol NSW roads on day six of Operation Safe Arrival.

The operation started on Friday and runs until Sunday night.

"Drivers need to take responsibility for their actions and understand the impact the choices they make can have ramifications for a wide-range of other people on the roads," Assistant NSW Commissioner John Hartley said in a statement.

Over the Christmas break in 2013, 28 lives were lost on Australian roads.

The national road toll period runs from 0001 hours (AEDT) December 23, 2014 until, 2359 Hours (AEDT) January 3, 2015, local times, in line with the Australia New Zealand Policing Advisory Board.
