Strange weather phenomenon forms over NSW beach

Waterspouts have formed over parts of the NSW mid-north coast creating a strange spectacle for locals.

The phenomenon - which look like small tornadoes - usually occurs over a body of water.

The funnel-shaped clouds formed over Old Bar Beach this afternoon and could be seen about 20 kilometres inland at Taree.

Waterspouts form when cool air travels over warm water, like the ocean.

Temperatures have dropped in NSW in recent days due to a complex low which will bring more cool weather.

A cold front will be accompanied by rain over the coming days as thunderstorms, strong winds and hazardous surf are also on the cards.
