Taking the high road to Gundagai

The road to Gundagai was never meant to be like this.

More than a third of drivers pulled over near the legendary NSW country town over the weekend tested positive to illicit drugs.

Police conducted a total of 29 random drug tests, with 10 returning positive.

Officers performed the same number of tests in Tumut, also in southern NSW, where six drivers tested positive.

Three brothers, aged 21, 23 and 27, were among those with drugs in their system.

Police say the men were pulled over at different times.

Four people driving with their children aged 16 or under returned positive drug tests.

Police say they're "stunned" by the results, considering they were from relatively small townships.

"Gundagai has a population of fewer than 2000 people, yet 10 drivers tested positive for illicit drugs in one day," Senior Sergeant Wayne McLachlan said in a statement.

"We remind drivers that it is not only illegal but highly dangerous to get behind the wheel with illicit drugs in your system."
