A woman has been charged after allegedly assaulting and spitting on another woman in inner Sydney in what police say was a racially motivated attack.

A 60-year-old woman was exercising with her husband in Tumbalong Park in Darling Harbour at 7.15am when a 43-year-old woman approached them.

Police say the younger woman threw a glass coffee cup at the 60-year-old and started yelling racial abuse before spitting at her.

Police officers patrolling nearby were alerted to the alleged attack and began searching for the woman.

She was arrested nearby and taken to Day Street Police Station.

She has been charged with intimidation, common assault and offensive behaviour over the alleged racist attack.

The 43-year-old was refused police bail and will appear in Central Local Court later today.

New South Wales has introduced $5000 on-the-spot fines for anyone who spits or coughs on workers during the coronavirus pandemic, but this doesn't apply to those not at work.
