Sydney wakes to coldest autumn morning in 18 years

It’s time for Sydneysiders to dust off those beanies and dig out those winter coats with temperatures dropping to the coldest they’ve been all year this morning.

The weather station at Sydney’s Observatory Hill recorded a minimum temperature of 7.1 degrees Celsius (C) at 6.23am today, the coldest May and autumn morning in 18 years, Weatherzone senior meteorologist Jacob Cronje told 9news.com.au.

The frosty temperature also marks the coldest Sydney morning this year so far, Mr Cronje said.

Sydney’s west saw the worst of the morning weather, with Bankstown waking up to 2.9C and Campbelltown matching its six year May morning record with 0.1C.

But those dreading the oncoming winter need not begin commiserating just yet, with the day set to warm up quickly.

“It’s going to be a pretty mild day between 18 and 19 degrees,” Mr Cronje confirmed.

However, Mr Cronje said winter in Sydney this year is expected to see slightly lower temperatures than usual, at least during sunlight hours.

“Temperatures will be slightly above average during the day and a bit less so during the evenings,” Mr Cronje said.

“Overall we’re looking at a bit of a dry start to June for Sydney.”

Residents in Orange, in the Central West region of New South Wales, woke up to sheets of frost covering homes, cars and the ground, with temperatures dropping below zero overnight.
