Sydney Uber driver jailed for raping sleeping under-aged teenage passenger 'unable to protect herself'

A Sydney Uber driver who raped a 17-year-old passenger sleeping alone in the back of his car has been jailed for eight-and-a-half years.

The victim was the last of three school friends in the car after Onur Dedeoglu was booked to drive the group home in August 2018.

The teenager woke to the Uber driver on top of her, kissing her and with his hand down her trousers.

Dedeoglu was found guilty at trial of sexual intercourse without consent and two counts of assault with an act of indecency.

His lack of remorse and continued argument that the girl in effect propositioned him "speaks to him having no insight", NSW District Court Judge Nicole Noman said when sentencing the 39-year-old.

"(The victim) was asleep and unable to protect herself," the judge said.

"She placed herself in a position of trust (and Dedeoglu) took advantage of the situation."

Dedeoglu must serve a non-parole period of six years.

His sentence was backdated to April 2019 to account for time in immigration detention and that already served in prison.
