New figures have revealed more than half of Sydney train lines are unable to fit any more passengers during the busiest time of the morning between 8am and 9am.

Blacktown residents told 9News they are already feeling the squeeze - saying they hardly ever get a seat on the train.

They are not alone - commuters in Western Sydney were the worst affected by a surge in passenger numbers.

In the year to March there was an 11 per cent rise in early demand for the T1 Western line - with carriages at 150 per cent capacity between 8am and 9am.

Transport for New South Wales CEO Howard Collins says there is some relief in sight.

"A further 17 Waratah trains are arriving from next July. This will be focusing certainly on the Western Line," he said.

But a longer term solution is years away - with the Metro West not slated for completion until at least 2030.

"If we are seeing 10 per cent growth each year, it's going to get much worse before metro west is built," said Western Sydney Business Chamber Executive Director David Borger.

Shadow Transport Minister Chris Minns says the commuters of Sydney can't wait.

"We need to fast track the metro West. It's an eternity for people on crowded trains to wait more than 10 years for the Metro West," he said.

The T4 Illawarra was also hit by a 4 per cent surge in demand since last year.
