Sydney teacher accused of assaulting four students cleared of all charges

Students referred to her as 'Mrs Trunchbull' - the mean fictional headmistress from Matilda, but today a NSW court found their accusations had more fiction than fact.

The 58-year-old Sydney woman, who can't be named for legal reasons, kept her head down as she walked into Liverpool Local Court, sunglasses shading her eyes.

She hasn't worked since being arrested in May last year, accused of assaulting four of her students, aged eight to 10 years old.

She was charged with six offences including spitting in the face of a student, punching another twice in the shoulder, pinching, scratching and pushing a child against a wall.

Today, Magistrate Daniel Covington dismissed every single charge, telling the court the children's stories lacked evidence, describing one where a student claimed the teacher drew "lots of blood" by scratching as "either a complete fabrication or at best an exaggeration".

He went on to say he had concerns about a number of witness statements taken from students.

He questioned why a boy who claimed the teacher spat on him didn't raise it on the day or even a week later.

In fact, it wasn't until he was sitting down with police that he made the complaint.

The education department won’t confirm if or when she'll be back in the classroom.

They said she "has not been teaching at schools since the issue was first raised, with her future employment status pending the outcome of the court case and any subsequent investigation."

Her lawyers are now pursuing legal costs, arguing police failed to investigate properly.
