Sydney students allegedly caught trying to electronically alter HSC results

Students from a high-performing school in Sydney’s west are under investigation, following claims they hacked into the Department of Education's computer system in a bid to alter HSC results.

It is alleged a group of year 12 students from Penrith High School obtained a teacher’s online login details in order to try and pry into the online HSC database.

9NEWS understands up to 10 students have been questioned and disciplined, although they will still be able to sit their end of year exams.

The Department of Education has responded to the incident in a statement to 9NEWS.

“The school is working with the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards,” it said.

“Police are also involved in the investigations.”

While the incident has raised concerns about the security of the online system affected, the Department of Education has confirmed that the integrity of HSC results remains intact.

According to 2014 statistics, Penrith High School was among NSW’s top 35 performing schools.
