A 24-year-old man has been shot in the chest after a shooting in Sydney's west overnight.

Up to 12 shots were fired into a parked car in Merrylands about 9.30pm yesterday.

Two men, both aged 24, were injured in the attack. They were taken to Westmead Hospital with serious injuries.

Up to 12 shots were fired into a parked car in Merrylands about 9.30pm yesterday. 9News

"One of those victims received a gunshot wound to the chest, was originally conveyed to hospital in a critical condition but his condition has now been revised to stable," Cumberland Police Area Command Detective Superintendent Darryl Jobson said today.

"The second male received a gunshot wound to the arm and he was conveyed to hospital in a stable condition. Both males will require surgery at some stage."

Police said two armed men, wearing long pants and hooded jumpers, approached the car, fired shots, and then left in a white or silver SUV.

The victims are known to police who "strongly believe the attack as targeted.

Emergency services were called to Merrylands following reports of multiple gunshots. 9News

"I want to assure members of the community that this is not a random incident, that police strongly believe that this is a targeted attack," Detective Superintendent Jobson said.

"I also want to appeal to members of the community who have knowledge of this incident to contact Crime Stoppers, give us a tip off of who's involved in this incident.

"This is a callous and brazen attack and we want to make sure we're investigating this as swiftly as we can."
