Two assailants are believed to be on the run after two members of the Hamze family were killed in a daylight shooting outside their home in Sydney's south-west today.

At around 8.55am, emergency services found two men in a ute on Osgood St near Woodville Road, Guildford, after reports of a shooting.

One man, 18-year-old Salim Hamze, died at the scene.

His father Toufik Hamze, 64, was taken to hospital in a critical condition and died later this morning.

With the investigation in its early stages, it is believed two people carried out the attack.

Police are investigating whether the shooting is linked to a gangland war between the Hamze and Alameddine families.

Speaking at a press conference, State Crime Command director Detective Chief Superintendent Darren Bennett said Salim Hamze was well-known to police.

He said Salim was on bail over firearms charges after a September arrest.

However, Chief Superintendent Bennett said police weren't sure of Salim's "position" within the Hamze group.

He said police were not aware of any involvement by Toufik Hamze in criminal activity.

But police do not know if either man was the sole target of the attack, nor yet what has motivated the shooting.

"Retribution-style, drug turf-style shootings are an ongoing issue for us in south-west Sydney," Chief Superintendent Bennett said.

"We're always worried about reprisals, worried about family feuds."

Police confirmed this afternoon that Raptor Squad officers had begun "proactive intelligence-based targeting" of known members and associates of involved criminal networks.

A burned-out getaway car was found in nearby Murdock Lane.

Witnesses said they heard a loud bang from the lane before a black car drove away at high speed.

No arrests have been made.

The turf war between the Hamze and Alameddine families has exploded in the past year, with dozens of shootings and at least half a dozen murders attributed to the conflict.

In October last year, Mejid Hamzy, the older brother of jailed Brothers 4 Life gang leader Bassam Hamzy, was shot dead outside his Condell Park home in Sydney's south-west.

Two men were charged over the shooting in July.

Bassam Hamzy's cousin Bilal Hamze was shot dead on Bridge Street in the Sydney CBD in June this year.

Police said at the time the success of Operation Ironside was likely to lead to increased violence on the streets.
