New Year's Eve 2016: Sydney road closures and traffic updates

With more than one million people set to line Sydney Harbour to see this year’s New Year’s Eve fireworks, revellers are being warned that major road closures will cause delays getting in and out of the area.

Sydney's New Year's Eve celebrations - which take 15 months of planning and cost an estimated $7 million - are billed as Australia's largest public event. 

Major roads in north Sydney, the eastern suburbs and Brighton-Le-Sands are now closed. Further road closures will be implemented this evening.

Buses will run on all major corridors into and out of the city, but some will divert and use temporary terminals due to road closures.

Extra train services will also run on most lines, with frequent services between North Sydney and Milsons Point from 2pm.

Ferries are expected to run normally until 5.35pm, when some stop running because of exclusion zones in the harbor.  

Special event clearways are also in place across Sydney until 5am tomorrow.

Vehicles left in these clearways will be towed and fees apply.

Major road closures:

• The Cahill Expressway is closed in both directions over Circular Quay

• Roads are closed in the Royal Botanic Gardens

• Roads in The Rocks and Circular Quay are closed

• At 7pm, most roads north of Bathurst Street will be closed in the CBD

• Between 8.30pm and 9.30pm and 11.30pm and 1.30am all citybound lanes of the Western Distributor and Anzac Bridge will close

• The Sydney Harbour Bridge will be closed in both directions between 11pm and 1.30am
