Brazen Sydney restaurant burglary turns into comedy of errors

A brazen burglary at a Sydney dining institution has turned into a comedy of errors.

But while the hapless thieves' attempts look funny, the owner of Bar Italia in Leichhardt isn't laughing.

The restaurant heist early on Saturday, captured on 32 security cameras, came after several attempts to crack into the Italian classic, which has been operating since the 1950s.

Footage from Thursday morning shared on the bar's Facebook page shows one hoody-wearing figure attempting to fly-kick the door open before attacking it with a hammer.

Once inside early on Saturday, they went on a rampage that included trying to shoulder charge an ATM.

They smashed open cash registers to get the drawers out before heading back out to dump the first of them into a shopping trolley.

But as the bumbling bandit headed back inside for more, the trolley was also on the move.

CCTV showed it rolling comically down the street, cash register and all, leaving the burglar flummoxed on their return.

Eventually, they found the trolley and made off with what's believed to be about $5000 in cash.

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
