Sydney Opera House destroyed in X-Men: Apocalypse trailer

Australia has not escaped the apocalyptic chaos of the new X-Men film, with the Opera House blown up in an epic scene from the trailer released overnight.

The iconic Sydney site is one of the few landmarks around the world shown being destroyed in the first full-length teaser.

Sydney Harbour and the CBD are on fire as the Opera House disintegrates in the X-Men: Apocalypse clip, which sees the mutants go to war in the latest edition of the Marvel series due to be released next month.

The release of the blockbuster trailer has been accompanied by more Australian-related news for the film, with heartthrob Hugh Jackman teasing that he will return as Wolverine in a surprise addition to the casting.

The star's clawed hand is all that is shown of his character in an incredibly short clip he posted to his Instagram with the simple caption "W.".

It's the first time back for Jackman since he featured in 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past.

The new film is due out on May 27.
