It's a skin crawling sight for any homeowner.

New Year's Day at 3.30am and a hooded and masked intruder hushes his henchmen as they attempt to break in through the front door.

The family inside is woken by the home's motion sensors, which allows them to watch on CCTV as the trio try every door before zeroing in on the dog flap.

It's only then the residents realise one of the would-be thieves is armed with a machete.

A Sydney family were left terrified as hooded men tried to break into their home. Nine

"We did get all of our family into one room upstairs and barricaded ourselves into the one room, hoping they would be unsuccessful," said the Sydney father who lives there.

He's too frightened to show his face after his house was targeted for a third time in six months.

The father says his mind flashed to the alleged murdered of a Brisbane mother last month, as he waited an agonising eight minutes for help to arrive.

"You immediately do think well what would be the consequences if they make it inside,". he said.

Not even increased security has been a deterrent at the house on Sydney's Lower North Shore.

Similar scenes are happening daily across the city, with teenagers tantalised by high performance cars and posting their illegal joyrides on social media site TikTok.

"One has to wonder, is there a failing in the justice system in how they are dealing with young offenders?" the father said.
