Sydney nightclub baron John Ibrahim has had the car he was travelling in seized by police in the city's east.

Ibrahim was in the front passenger seat of the black Audi SQ5 when it was pulled over at Rose Bay just after 1pm.

It appears he had been supervising his long-time friend and fellow Kings Cross nightclub owner Mimmo Salvato for a driving lesson. But the number plate on the black Audi SQ5 triggered the police automatic recognition system and they were pulled over.

When police checked Salvato's licence they discovered he was a learner driver but had not been displaying his L-plates, which were sitting in the back seat.

Salvato was issued a ticket for that, while Ibrahim was reminded his licence is currently suspended. Plain clothed officers searched the car but found nothing.

Still, the Audi was seized and towed away due to a Victorian court order that 9News understands was over a payment dispute not involving Ibrahim.

Just last year, the nightclub king's Dover Heights home was raided by police searching for guns. After five hours inside they left empty handed.

At the time his lawyer called it "harassment".

Today, Ibrahim left on foot, leaving his suspension advice notice with police.
