'Shocked and sad': Mum's horror after bus ploughs into family home in Sydney's south-west

A Sydney woman is counting her lucky stars she and her children weren't home when a bus smashed through the family abode.

The bus was carrying multiple passengers when it crashed into a house on Aplin Road in Bonnyrigg Heights around 9.50am today.

Fayruz Sebo and her three children thankfully weren't home when the crash took place.

Today was the first day back at school for most NSW students.

If it happened yesterday, though, it could have been a very different story.

"Just shocked and sad... and this is my kids' house," Sebo told 9News through tears.

Neighbour Zaid Hilayel rushed to the scene when he heard the almighty crash.

"It sounded like a bomb," he told 9News.

"I ran into the house to see if anyone was home... no-one was in there, thank God."

Sebo and her kids now face tonight with their home half-destroyed as she assesses the damage.

"The garage... the living room... my kids' room," she added.

Six people who were treated for minor injuries walked away from the crash.

The bus driver, aged in his 50s, was taken to Liverpool Hospital with minor injuries.

The crash caused significant damage to the home, caving in part of the roof.

The structure of the home has been deemed safe by NSW Fire and Rescue.

Initial suggestions are the accident was caused by a brake failure.

The bus will be properly examined by mechanics to determine the source.
