Chaos in parts of Sydney over Metro parking as new trains gain passengers

The new Metro line's popularity is proving too much for commuters in one part of Sydney.

Commuters are driving from far and wide to board at a single station, causing car park chaos.

It's the end of the line but finding a park at Tallawong, in the north-west, has gone from painful to excruciating.

Every morning mother-of-three Gemma Silvia goes into battle.

Two weeks since the Metro line extension opened she says the car park fills up by 7.15am.

"It's definitely getting worse," she said.

"In two years I have never secured a spot there."

Residential streets are crammed too, and fines are common.

Silvia has copped more than $900 worth.

A kilometre from the station she finally found a spot on the day 9News joined her.

After leaving home in McGrath's Hill, if she's unlucky at Tallawong she goes further down the line.

She drives to Rouse Hill and Kellyville, and if they fail, onto Bella Vista.

Striking out means driving to work at Macquarie University and paying $45 for parking.

"I could potentially spend an extra hour which I can't really afford," she said.

Many others are racing against the clock.

"They have the area to build more parking, but they just don't," one commuter said.

Desperate drivers were using a vacant block as a makeshift car park.

But about the same time the new Metro line opened a fence went up and yet another chance at a parking spot vanished.

In the first week the new Metro line opened 39,000 passengers boarded at Tallawong, up 30 per cent on the week before.

Its single-storey commuter car parks have 1000 spaces.

Labor MP Warren Kirby blames the previous government for the shortfall and is now asking his own treasurer for the funds.

"That car park is a shining example of how one failure in the system can cause chaos every morning," he said.

"Yes the carpark has to be upgraded, money right now is a challenge."

In the meantime, they're trying to make it easier for people to catch a bus.
