Sydney man with gunshot wounds found during RBT stop

A man with gunshot wounds has been taken to hospital after police spotted him in a car during a random breath test this morning.

The 27-year-old man was discovered by police in a car driving west along the M4 Motorway in Merrylands around 2.20am after they stopped the vehicle during a routine RBT.

He had gunshot wounds to both his stomach and his groin and was sitting in the passenger seat of a white Great Wall utility.  

NSW Police has confirmed authorities treated the man at the scene.

“The police on the scene acted very quickly to treat the person and with the assistance of paramedics he was taken to Westmead Hospital,” Detective Inspector Damian Henry said.

Authorities reportedly placed the man in the ute’s tray where paramedics treated him before taking him to hospital.

He is expected to undergo surgery, but the injuries were deemed non-life threatening.

Four other men who were travelling in the car were taken to Merrylands Police Station and are assisting police with their enquiries. They have not been charged.

Det. Insp. Henry confirmed authorities are talking to police in Marrickville to see if the incident is linked to possible shooting in Petersham reported in the early hours of this morning.

Police were called to a car park on Queens Street, Petersham, around 2am after witnesses reported hearing yelling, breaking glass, a gunshot and a car quickly leaving the area.

They did not find anyone injured at the scene.

Det. Insp. Henry said police have found no direct links between the two incidents at this stage.
