Man charged after staff allegedly stabbed at Sydney hospital

A man has been charged after staff at a hospital in Western Sydney were allegedly assaulted and stabbed.

Police were called to Westmead Hospital about 11.30pm yesterday where four staff members were allegedly attacked by a 39-year-old man.

Two security guards, aged 24 and 25, were allegedly stabbed in the effort to subdue him

One was allegedly stabbed in the neck, the other in the wrist.

The pair are in stable condition.

A third security guard dislocated his shoulder and a male nurse suffered minor injuries.

The man, believed to be a patient, was arrested and was put under police guard at the hospital before he was taken to Parramatta Police station.

He has now been charged with multiple offences.

They include two counts of assaulting frontline health workers causing actual bodily harm, one count of assaulting a frontline worker without actual bodily harm, and one count of common assault and resisting arrest using a weapon.

He was refused police bail and will appear in Parramatta Local Court tomorrow.

Health Services Union NSW secretary Gerard Hayes called for greater protections for health workers after the alleged attack.

"We have argued consistently for greater security numbers and powers, and will continue to push for this and better personal protective equipment," he said.
