About 1000 shoppers and staff have been cleared from a major shopping hub in Sydney due to a gas leak.

The western section of the Westfield Mall in Miranda, in Sydney's south, was cleared on Thursday afternoon after a gas main was ruptured.

There is a construction site neighbouring the mall, which is undergoing redevelopment.

NSW Fire and Rescue Superintendent Ian Krimmer said the area had been evacuated as a precaution.

"Three levels of the Miranda shopping centre have been evacuated," he told the ABC.

"We have no reports of any injuries and we are currently working with the gas company to seal the leak off."

Sylvania Road and Wandella Road in Miranda are also closed due to the gas leak.

Buses are being diverted from the area.
